Wikipedia, a combination of “wiki” (a website collaborative) and encyclopedia, is a web-based, free-to-use content encyclopedia. It opened doors in 2001 and today has approximately 5.5 million entries in English or the equivalent of 2,000 print volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica. Wikipedia is updated collaboratively by anonymous volunteers. Anyone with Internet access can write and edit Wikipedia articles. Articles are also translated into 299 languages.

The site has grown into the largest reference websites with 374 million unique visitors per month. 5,000 articles have been labelled as “Featured” by the Wikipedia community. These are held as exemplary for writing and overall content.
